Melbourne’s favourite spot for New Year’s Eve celebrations will beat to the sound of African drums in a free program of reggae, funk, and classic tracks.
Fed Square’s New Year’s Eve party starts at 8pm with Gambian master percussionist King Marong and his band Afro Mandinko. Fusing the centuries-old traditions of West Africa with the contemporary sounds of Western styles, their irresistible dance music is a modern mix of afrobeat, funk, latin, reggae, dance-hall, and jazz; earning them many fans at regular Melbourne haunt, The Night Cat.
Wickid Force Breakers, one of Australia’s leading breakdance crews, will heat things up from 9.30pm with an incredible display of breaking, locking, and popping. The crew has competed and performed around the world supporting such acts as The Black Eyed Peas, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Hill Top Hoods, and Snoop Dogg as well as winning the Australian National Break Dance Championships three times and representing Australia in ‘The Battle of The Year’.
Party band, Chunky Jam will headline the evening with everybody’s favourite tracks from Lady Gaga and Kelly Rowland to Michael Jackson and Kings of Leon.
The entire program will be broadcast live on two Big Screens, with Fed Square offering one of the best views of the city’s Midnight fireworks.
The Square is an alcohol and glass-free zone to ensure safe celebrations, but for visitors wanting to bring in the New Year over a glass of bubbles or a cocktail, there are a huge range of restaurants and bars located throughout the Square where you can enjoy a drink or dinner package.
