This story is set in a rural village in Central Europe. It's harvest time and the villagers are celebrating. An intriguing character in the village is the toy maker Dr Coppelius. His house holds mysteries and magic as mischievous young intruders discover.
"Coppelia" combines a light hearted, almost rustic story full of exotic and colourful national dances and folk traditions with a sparkling score by Leo Delibes.
Its premiere at L'Opera de Paris on 25 May 1870 ushered in a new theme for ballet: that of dolls coming to life.
The lead dancers in the production are international guest principal artists:
Jin Yao - Principal Artist Hong Kong Ballet
Adam Thurlow - Australian Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet
Adrian Demetrjevitch - former Ballet Master of the Berlin Ballet
A full orchestra directed by Professor Martin Jarvis PhD, with the support of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Charles Darwin University, will accompany the ballet.
