Surfers Paradise Beach will be transformed into a golden gallery of the beautiful and the bizarre at the inaugural Australian Sand Sculpting Championships in February 2012.
Some of Australia’s best sand sculptors will descend on the Foreshore to mold and shape Surfers Paradise sand into a coterie of fantastic creatures, beguiling mermaids and crowd-pleasing sculptures.
Families and passers-by will be enthralled by the works, which will be carefully built up over several days then displayed on the Foreshore for a further week.
Gold Coasters and visitors can get involved by sculpting in the amateurs division or voting for the coveted People’s Choice Award.
Newcomers will also be shown the ropes at beachfront sand sculpting workshops running parallel with the competition, which will culminate in the public sculpting of a titanic 25-tonne work on Surfers Paradise Beach.
Surfers Paradise… where only a line in the sand separates ‘beach’ from ‘art’!
